Michael Jordan is considered one of the greatest basketball players ever. Throughout his career, he has earned numerous awards and championships.

He has had a major influence on the sports world by pioneering long-length shorts and setting new rules in basketball. Additionally, he has become something of a cultural icon.

He Was Born in Brooklyn

Michael Jordan was born on February 17, 1963 in Brooklyn, New York to James and Delores Jordan.

At the age of two, his family moved to Wilmington, North Carolina. While attending Laney High School, he excelled in three sports and earned a place on McDonald’s All-American Team.

He enjoyed playing football, but basketball was his preferred sport. Growing up as an incredible athlete with impressive skills and charisma, he became a star player in the NBA with ease.

He was an iconic basketball player who achieved worldwide fame and served as a major spokesperson for Nike and other sports brands. Additionally, he earned induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and has received numerous awards, including six NBA Championships, two Olympic gold medals, and many other distinctions.

He Was Raised in North Carolina

Michael Jordan was just a teenager when he attended Laney High School in Wilmington, North Carolina. Though he was cut from the varsity team, Jordan never gave up and worked tirelessly to become one of basketball’s all-time greats.

Michael Jordan ultimately received a basketball scholarship to the University of North Carolina and played an integral role in their victory over Georgetown in the 1982 NCAA championship game. As a freshman, Jordan made history by becoming one of only seven players to score 100 points for North Carolina during a single game!

He Was Selected by the Chicago Bulls

Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls was selected with the third overall pick in the 1984 NBA draft, coming behind two of basketball’s all-time greats – 7-foot Sam Bowie of Kentucky Wildcats and Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame inductee Hakeem Olajuwon of Houston University.

At the time Jordan was selected, Chicago already boasted an impressive roster with All-NBA stars John Stockton and Charles Barkley, plus sharpshooter Rod Thorn. With Jordan joining this elite group of players, Chicago had already established itself as a formidable rival.

Jordan was an integral part of the Warriors’ six NBA championships during his tenure, earning five Most Valuable Player awards and being named the league’s most outstanding player a record seven times.

He Won Six NBA Championships

Michael Jordan won six NBA Championships with the Chicago Bulls during his career. Additionally, he was a 14-time All-Star and earned himself six times Finals MVP honors.

In 1996-97, he led the Bulls to an NBA-best 62-20 record with 28.7 points per game and earned himself his fifth regular-season MVP award.

Jordan and the Bulls finished with an incredible 15-2 record during the playoffs, winning three games in a row to advance to the NBA Finals where they defeated Phoenix Suns 4-2 for Jordan’s third championship three-peat. The series’ highlight was Jordan’s iconic “switch hands” layup that became immortalized via video clip.

He Retired from Basketball

Michael Jordan was considered one of basketball’s all-time greats during the early 1990s. His relentless play style and incredible jumping prowess left fans in awe.

He played for the Chicago Bulls, winning six NBA championships and being named Finals MVP each time. Additionally, he was a 14-time All-Star and All-Defensive First Team member throughout his career.

In 1993, Jordan revealed to reporters that he no longer had the desire to play basketball and that the loss of his father had played a part in making him take this decision.

He then chose to spend the next several years playing professional baseball before returning to the NBA in 1995. His return ignited a resurgence of sorts in the league and ultimately led MJ to purchase a share of the Washington Wizards.
